It was yet another day at office. In a routine week, same old work, and the routine seemed to continue. All of a sudden my friend Abhi called "Game for F1 at Singapore?", I checked the day it was wednesday, and its around 12 in the noon. So very sure neither of us could be drunk. But then heck, why not. The entire discussion was for less than 5 mins. And the next thing we knew we had our F1 tickets, it was a great deal we got. Thanks to Abhi's friend Kumar. 6k for three days including concert passes to Shakira and Linkin Park. Whew. Two to three weeks later we had our Visa's and we were already boarding Sri Lankan Airways. It was happening really fast. We considered a lot of airways from Tiger airways to Singapore Airways. But we choose Sri lankan based on the cost, and the good reviews. Stop over at Colombo for a couple of hours and nearly 6 hours later we were in Changi airport. No wonder it is considered amongst the best. Truly impressive.
One of the things that impressed me the most about the city is its metro. Connects majority of the city, and very convenient.
A couple of very iconic structures that identify Singapore.
The food is a mixed balance of Asian and Sub-continent cuisines. I remember very clearly one place "Jumbo". And the food my friends had. It surely looks yummy and very inviting for a sea food lover.
This is what was served
And well this is what was left afterwards
And for vegetarians like me..
This is all that is available for veggies. And you can get multiple servings of the same also.
While my friends were busy eating I manage a few clicks. This being one of them.
But the food of the city is really good. We stayed in little India, and we get every type of Indian food there. And the taste is not very different from what we are used to. Adayar Anand Bhavan makes its presence felt. Also little India has a lot of local food at affordable price. And is one of the must visit places.
The night life of the city is unparalleled. With lots of pubs the city never slept during the F1 weekend. The city is very safe. Traveling at around 2 AM also felt very safe. The city also has a lot of good attractions, aquarium, zoo to name a few.
And some water sports too.
The river side is very calm, and one of the best places to sit during the evening and relax.
And the F1 itself.
The sound, the adrenaline, the fast cars all are just impressive. It is one the must things to experience in life. And this being the street race, the experience is unique. The cars approach us at close to 250-300 km/h and seem to leave us at even faster pace. Photographing them turned out to be very challenging. Good that we had pass for all the 3 days.
Talking purely from a photographic point of view
Day 1: This seems impossible, how do I photograph them. This 3 hours went mostly in trying out all the techniques i knew. And since being a free practice, the drivers push the car to the limit, and the speeds are actually much higher than they are in the actual race. Shit... it just seems impossible. To make matters worse, they are all night race. Almost all the pics were either the front wheel or the back wheel.
Day 2: Did some surveying of the race track. Picked up a very narrow spot, where I could get a good view, and it was one of the slowest parts of the circuit. Now tried, well did manage to capture the car, but not impressive. I had already began to curse my 18-200 lens for the lack of ability to zoom in a little further ahead.
Race Day: Finally managed a few decent clicks, with my D-90, 18-200. Hand held.
Race day began with drivers parade.
And the Race itself
Some pics from Day 1 and Day 2 which I wished were better than what they are..
Well not all pics were hard..
On the whole it was a very nice and good experience.
F1 is something that one must attend to feel the pulse of it. And from photography point of view, it was a totally new experience learning new techniques on how to photograph fast action, and something as fast as F1 cars.
Been almost two years since this trip, and the memories never fade.
